about

''Stepping Sounds is a unique project where the group simultaneously developed expressive movement and dance in tandem with music and sounds to accompany the choreography.

I was primarily involved with helping to create the music as Rosa developed and directed the choreography. Rosa drew directly on thoughts and feelings meaningful to our individual and collective experience at the current time and helped translate that into expressive movement for each individual in the group.

For the music, I tried to think of ways to directly connect the two activities to make both elements expressive of each other. I created two pressure responsive floor panels that we incorporated into the dance space, which when activated, generated sequences and phrases from an electronic drum module. In addition to the movement-triggered percussion we explored other sounds to express some of the different moods and emotions being discussed, from being happy and energised to feeling contemplative, apprehensive, etc.

While some members of the group were engaged in movement, others would join me performing live percussion and vocals as we aimed to describe and inspire the unfolding dance.

Whilst all this was happening, Oliver was discreetly filming the action. He had chosen the very beautiful Wharf Academy as the venue which engendered an uplifting feeling with its tall ceiling and impressive windows which also adds a lovely visual element to the film.
By the final session we had arrived at a very clear way of working and managed to put all of the ideas into a wonderful extended performance which satisfyingly concluded the project.

Stepping Sounds meant a lot to me personally as I have not been able to work in person with a group since our 'Winter into Spring' project, which was completed just before the first lockdown. Stepping Sounds brought back feelings of optimism which I found deeply uplifting after this strange period of enforced isolation. Many thanks to the brilliant and forward thinking Musical Keys for making this work possible.''
