about

This music was originally commissioned to soundtrack the film made for the Green Space Dark Skies project, held at Barton Broad, June 2022.

Much of the soundtrack for the Barton Broad film was made in a series of workshops with a group from Stepping Stones, a charity supporting Learning Disabled adults based in Norwich. This was our fourth recording project together organised through Musical Keys by Oliver Payne, who also participated in the sessions and made the recordings.

David Ross lead the workshops along with trumpeter and composer Chris Dowding.

To create the music we drew on our individual and collective experiences, memories and feelings about the location. Members of the group had spent time on Barton Broad with access made possible by the Nancy Oldfield Trust or had visited with family at some time. Using an array of traditional acoustic instruments, vocals, electronic percussion and keyboard along with live looping and signal processing techniques, we attempted to evoke different Broadland atmospheres or scenes through exploratory collective improvisation. Together we created impressionistic sound-worlds to describe a clear, still, starry night-sky reflected on a mirror-like broad, a bustling sunny day at Barton with boats of different sizes moving in all directions and other contrasting scenes. We thought about changing light, wind, rain, and the surface patterns on water, finding different ways to express these ideas through sound.

One of the participants shared a beautiful reminiscence of sailing there with her father, which became the basis of one of the pieces. Some of the water sounds you hear are made by gently waving flasks containing liquid around a microphone, captured as a repeating loop, which ends up sounding surprisingly naturalistic in the context of the film.

I edited the best material from the sessions and prepared a series of tracks for the film makers to weave around the images and spoken word of Hugh Lupton. I’m personally very proud of just how well our music compliments the finished film, -all credit to the very talented Stepping Stones Ensemble!.
